Your PC might not have the right driver to recognize the camera. Did your camera come with a CD? It might have the driver on it. If not, go to the Nikon website and search for a driver that will work on Windows ME.

Good luck!

Does the instruction book say how to transfer the pictures to the computer (or whatever you are trying to do?) With mine you just plug it in and turn it on, the computer reads the new hardware available and you get right into it. Check your instructions, try it with the camera on and with the camera off, when it is plugged in check under your Drives and see if a new one has popped up (that would be your camera).

You have to install the drivers in order for it to work. Did you get a CD with your camera? if you didn't "google" the model of your camera and the word "drivers" or check Nikon's website..
