This is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). It is very closely linked to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) but they are not the same thing.

A person who suffers from BDD is extremely critical of his or her self image even though there is nothing physically wrong with his or her appearace. A BDD sufferer will often become preoccupied with an imagined defect or focus intensely on a slight anomaly. The disorder is also referred to as "imagined ugliness" and may manifest itself in compulsive mirror checking (hence its close ties to OCD) or mirror avoidance. In extreme cases, a person with BDD might drop all social contact.

It sounds like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder with Social Anxiety. If you are really worried about having mental troubles, see a therapist. Seeing a therapist doesn't mean you're crazy, just that you are having some trouble in your life that is too difficult for you to deal with on your own. Technically, everyone is crazy - but it only becomes a problem when it starts affecting your life negatively.

More info from the DSM-IV:
Excerpt: "The essential features of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder are recurrent obsessions or compulsions (Criterion A) that are severe enough to be time consuming (i.e., they take more than 1 hour a day) or cause marked distress or significant impairment (Criterion C). At some point during the course of the disorder, the person has recognized that the obsessions or compulsions are excessive or unreasonable (Criterion B)."

Excerpt: "The essential feature of Social Phobia is a marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which embarrassment may occur (Criterion A). Exposure to the social or performance situation almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response (Criterion B)."

Your best source is the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), in whichever edition they're using now, either the IV, or IV-R, or V, or whichever. That's the book where all the diagnoses come from, and can be found in libraries or bookstores (quite expensive though), or maybe you can access it on the internet somehow. Since I've been retired from counseling for about 7 or so years, I can't be sure which terms they're using now, but I read rachel's answer and I'd suggest starting there. I also read gmonte33's answer and, although I'm not familiar with that dianosis after being retired for 7+ years, that might be one to look up in the glossary or whatever to see if there is such a diagnosis and whether it is better than the OCD that rachel suggests. God Bless you.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder fits the bill. Examples of famous individuals with BDD are Michael Jackson, Cher, and Charo. One imagnined or small defect is drawn way out of proportion, and the result is that the person fixates on this defect.

OCD may also be the culprit you seek. Many people with OCD will compulsively wash their hands and shower for hours a day. Some will also have these obsessions about their appearance and spend inordinate amounts of time preparing.

I think this falls under the category of OCD Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Oprah Winfrey did a show on this and there were girls and guys acting EXACTLY how you described, I hope there is a way for you to write to Oprah and get a copy of that show to show you that you are not alone.

I'm pretty sure medication/therapy is the treatment.

Take care sweetheart.
