If your service was bad, ask to talk to a manager! You will probably get your whole bill comped! (free!) Then you are saving even more money!
Seriously, managers want to know. And waitstaff often gets taxed regardless of how much you tip them. You are actually costing them money if you don't leave anything so even if they sucked you should still leave a couple of dollars. At least 5-7%
When my service is bad, but not bad enough to talk to the management, i figure out 15% to the penny. Waiters get the message.

Honestly....I wouldn't give them a penny, if they screw up the order there is no excuse for that I mean usually the waiter repeats the order to you before leaving the table...there is no excuse for that. And if they spill something on you, well i would see how they handle the situation, that happened to me once and the waitress was like oops sorry that's like the 6th time i did that...well that is just unacceptable!! If there really sincere then I would leave them 15% otherwise I wouldn't leave them a dime. Personally I don't believe in tipping at restaurants I was a housekeeper and I had to clean up the most disgusting stuff and about 10% of ppl left tips!

I usually give 15% or more when the service is good, 10% if its slow or they forgot something, whatever... But there's been a few occasions when I left nothing or just a few pennies when the waiter is rude or REALLY terrible.
Once in a Chinese restaurant, the waitress never came around to take our order. We had to get somebody else to take our order. At the end of the meal, it took me over 30 minutes to get her attention for the check. No apologies, just bad attitude. She was glaring at me for not leaving any tips. So what?!?! She doesn't deserve any.
Remember: tips are for good service, its not MANDATORY if they don't give you any service.

If the employer would pay it's workers the fair amount , we wouldn't have to leave a tip. If a sever is so bad as to spill a drink on you, I would not leave anything. Why promote bad service. If a server is so bad I would ask for manager, and complain. I have also heard, if the service is so bad leave a penny under the plate.

I would say 10% because that's the main way they get there money (15 to 20% or more is for good service) BUT I would tell the manager or the waiter/waitress about the problem and how they need to work on their skills or correct them ...in the most nice way you can tell them

As a restaurant manager; I can say that if you have received bad service; don't leave anything and report the trouble to the acting manager. If the service is poor; then I would only leave 1/2 of what I normally would have.

I was a server for 10 yrs. Most of the time the bad service was due to the kitchen (food too long, bad cooking) or overseating in a section which puts major stress on a servers ability to be present at the table as much as they would like.As long as the server isn't rude and tries to do a good job, tip!!!! I tip 15% for adequate service, 20 for excellent, and 10 for so so service. 5 for horrible service ANYONE who tells you not to tip something apparently hasn't worked in that environment and is ignorant to the situation. That is the only source of income for servers and it isn't always an easy job. Especially when the guests you serve constantly complain or are rude themselves. Please remember servers are human too.

If the service is poor, you are not obligated to leave a tip. Period. That would be rewarding careless behavior.
How will YOU look "rude" if the service was miserable and dangerous?
You can even tell the manager that you are not leaving a tip and give the reason(s).

Here's the tip breakdown
Horrible service-Round up to the nerest dollar
Bad service-10%
Good to Average service-15%
Great service-20%
Remember always keep a reciept with how much you tipped.
Also when tipping cash is the way to go, any tip left on plastic is usually recordable and is forced to be reported.
