Onkyo, Sony, HK to name a couple. Assuming you are going with surround sound, generally the speaker/receiver match isn't as important as the speakers matching each other. You can pick up a good 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 receiver for around $500. As far as speakers go the little satellites sets are OK but they are generally weak in the upper bass and lower mid range area. To get the best balanced sound towers, or large bookshelf, with a good sub are the way to go. Subs have really come a long way in the last 10 years also, dual 8" or 10" at the most are as large as you want to go, they will pack as much bass as a 12" or 15" and faster response that gives sharp hits for music and action movies.
Wood floors are probably you biggest issue, you will want to put isolation stands under your main speakers, in a pinch cinder blocks with carpet under them and under the speakers work well also.

Klipsch heresy speakers with any reciever UNDER 100 watts, preferably a tube amp. But that will blow your $2000 budget. CD player or DVD must have burr brown DACs too.
Basically, do not waste your hard earned money on anything that Best Buy or Circuit City sells. Unless all you listen to is eminem or snoopy dog.

The answer to this is very subjective. Go with a more powerful Sony receiver, with speakers by Boston Acoustics.
