There are two basic routes out of Texas... thru El Paso and towards Albuquerque, NM. I think the Albuquerque route is nicer.

Interstate 10 from El Paso west into LA, Interstate 5 north to Valencia. Or the 10 to state 57 north to interstate 210 west to the 5 North to avoid drive thru LA.

Valencia, CA is near Magic Mountain. Take whatever freeway that will take you to the I-5 north.
California has lots of traffic. You'll need a map and lots of patients.
