How many words do you read at one time?

Also do you say the works in your mind when you read?

Also what makes you read so fast?

I can't tell you pages/minute since there is no standard page size.

I have been tested at about 830 words per minute on average. But that isn't really a useful number.

For technical writing, like a science text book, my pace was about 570 words/minute.

For fiction, the pace was almost 1200 words/minute
(And yes, I can correctly answer questions about what I read. I can even make exact quotes of certain parts)

I don't know how it is done. I have always been a quick reader,

However, I definitely do NOT think about the sound of each word or "say" the words in my mind. I think that would make things very slow.

I also type pretty fast, but have never been tested to get a number. (I'm slower if I have to type text from a manuscript, and faster if I am just typing thoughts out of my head) But, I cannot touch type at all if I think about each letter in each word that I want to type. I think in words and phrases for typing, so I think it is kind of the same thing for speed reading. You have to absorb groups of words all at once, not just one by one.

Depends on what I'm reading----for general fiction, I can get through a 300-page paperback in about 1.5 hours.

Nonfiction, in an area I enjoy, like history or medicine---about 175-225 pages per hour, if reading for general information.

This is sort of a "deep skimming", with looking at multiple words at a time----hard to explain; I just do it. Never remember sounding out the words, or going along with the finger----but in my area, kids were hooked on books REAL early, back in the early 1960s. (Parents usually started reading to kids around birth----no yuppie bit; they just thought books were a Real Fine Thing----and going to libraries was a treat for when you were good. Most of my age peers were reading simple stories by the time they entered kindergarten. No magic---just lots and lots and lots of encouragement and practice.)

The more I read, the easier it got, and the faster I was able to read.

No offense to you, or fast readers. I enjoy reading, and an old quote I recall is "Reading is like BREAD, for the soul."

It should be SAVORED,,,not snacked on.

Certainly anyone who can set speed records for reading text,,,MIGHT actually retain what they read, but speed is not the purpose that the written word, designed into books, was meant to encourage.
