SOS (--- ... ---) or continuous sounding of a horn; also in the ColRegs ( follow the link given to the USCG ) is the 5 or more blasts of a horn signal to be used if uncertain of another boats intentions
( The famous WTF signal ).

Three blasts on a horn means my engines are going astern ( I'm backing up or at least slowing down), not distress.

Five short blasts followed by one long means Abandon Ship.

Blow the horn or whistle 3 or more times in a row or continuously.

Other horn signals give specifics. but essentially if the horn or whistle is going theirs trouble.
