Not needing credit is more important.

Nothing in the world is more important to me than having the ones I love make it home safe everyday after work, school, daycare. Anything else is just "stuff". I had to let go of a vehicle a couple years ago, the first and only NEW car I ever had..... it hurt and I was sad, but I got over it, I still get around, and life goes on.
I felt so good when I got it, I would pull up at stoplights and look at the car next to me and say 'neener neener my car's newer than yours'. Maybe I had the wrong attitude and it was "carma" (pun intended)
Seriously, credit isn't all it's cracked up to be, I think being able to pay up front gives me a better feeling inside than worrying about how much I owe.

I had to turn in a vehicle that was a lease early because i quit my job and couldnt afford the notes anymore. Now i own a 1997 nissan altima that is completely paid for, and i enjoy not having to pay any car notes. It seems these days with the gas prices the way that they are, i don't find myself driving around as much in my car, therefore it does not matter to me how great my car is, or how fast it can go. I also have not gotten any speeding tickets since i got this Nissan Altima. I enjoy having all of the extra money that i used to spend on my car note, plus the 100/300 outrageous insurance coverage i was required to have on my vehicle since it was a lease. Much more money to spend on other things i like.

Good health, close friends, a roof over my head, food in the fridge, safety, and some freedom.

Credit dings aren't as bad as they used to be. There are a lot more options for you now than there ever have been before. It'll be OK. Good luck!

Can't really give you any financial advise but your question reminds me of a plaque my wife has.....

"A good mother has dirty floors, a messy kitchen and happy kids"

Now how important is good credit?
