Some people honestly don't know that the customary tip is 10%.
I like to think I am good tipper. At bars I tip a buck a drink. And I have a favorite waitress/waiter at each resturaunt that gets tipped a nice sum.
Not to be rude but if this happens a lot..... maybe you should take a look at yourself. Are you being the best server you can be? Maybe they do not think you are doing a good job?
Plus sometimes if friends or couples go out one person picks up the check and the other leaves a tip. They may have no clue on the amount and think they are leaving a fair tip.
Some people are under the impression that servers make minimun wage. Plus you said yourself you were new. Maybe you have not had enough time to adjust.
Hope this helps! Have a great day!!!

Tipping is at 18% now. Most servers/bartenders do NOT make minimum wage because they are taxed on their tips and that becomes part of their wages (unless the law has changed again).
I consider myself a very good tipper and can also tell if it is the kitchen's fault, not the server, so I am quite fair if the server seems to be really trying. But if the service sucks all the way around, I WILL get my point across, even if it means calling the manager over.
My advice to the original asker: You are in the wrong market. Get into the older age bracket, say 40 to 60. They are in a different place financially. The younger ones are paying for college, kids, and/or babysitters.

I think depends on the service. If good service, 25%. I am talking I never had to ask for a thing. And a good server can read minds after while. Second nature, this table needs a refill on drinks. Looks like they will need extra napkins. This table wants to be left alone. (Big clue when their conversation stops when you arrive at the table) This table needs some extra attention. (Doesn't look like they have anything to talk about)
If bad service, I mean everything from spilled drink in the lap, wrong meals brought to the table, burned food, having to eat my meal when I ran out of drink halfway through the meal, and the server was nowhere to be seen. No tip.

If I spent 60 or 70 bucks, I would give a tip (.20%) of $12-$14.

I hate to say that some people are just cheap. Some feel that u took the job and u knew the rules about tipping, some feel that makes it optional. but u have to think also, how is your table side manner. if u were the customer what would u want your waiter/waitress to do or not do and do just that.

It depends on the person. Most of the time they are cheap but sometimes the people are misinformed. I was told that you needed to leave a 15% tip.

For food service( waiting tables/bartending) I always tip 20%. Unless the service was really horrible then I don't bother.

At the wedding I recently attended, the beer was $4.50 and I just left it as $5. I don't tip a full 15% on beer because all they have to do is open it and hand it to me. Sometimes I only tip 25 cents.

People really have no knowledge of how to tip. I never really tipped very much, until I got with my boyfriend. His sister is a waitress and he informed me of how much they need the money.

20% great service
15% good service
10-12% not too good
2-3% nuisance tip to get attention to change bad behavior
1 penny in a class of water - abusive behavior by server
BTW "It's your own fault" they usually earn minimum wage and need the tips just to get by, you jerk!
