I'm going through the same thing at the moment and I feel your pain (no pun intended).
What works best for me is:
1) Buy Paramol (about £4), they are the strongest tablets you can get and I promise your pain will diminish within 1 min. You can take an Ibuprofen tablet as well. Always confirm with the pharmacist first.
2) Try ground cloves - crush them if need be and place it on the area of pain, also works a treat and takes a little bit longer.
3) Rub ice on the "webbed area" of your hand between the thumb and first finger. It does actually but again takes a while.
Most important is please go see a dentist as soon as you're ready.

go to your nearest casualty department - most of the drunks should have left by now and the waiting time shouldn't be too bad. Tell them the pain is really really bad and you can't sleep and is there anything, anything they can do to help? They may give you some strong painkillers which may help for a day or two until you get to see a dentist, and if they think its infected they may give you some antibiotics. Take them as directed. If the pain is due to an abcess you need to see a dentist, but the antibiotics might help in about 24 hours. If its a hole in your tooth, go to the chemist tomorrow and get some oil of cloves you can apply to the tooth. The pain may settle if the nerve dies down. You still need to see a dentist or it may turn into an abcess....... :-(

See a dentist without delaying. If it is something minor they can fix it. If you let it go on untreated it may have to be removed. It could be a cavity or an abscess. Either way, get it checked out. Until you get in to see a dentist take ibuprofen or Aleve and use the toothache medicine that comes in the DenTek Kit which can be found in any pharmacy near the orajel and such.

Sorry. Dental is the worst kind. One thing which may really help you is this one which I discovered one time during a particularly difficult night with the same damned thing: take a napkin and dip it into ice cold water and take that roll and place it between your cheek and the gum area where the tooth is acting up. Part of your pain and discomfort is being caused by the heat from the inside of your cheek, believe it or not. The minute you isolate your cheek from your gums, the pain should quiet down a little. Mouthwash, especially Listerine, has anesthetic qualities. If you dip the paper towel in that, it works even better. Find out if ice or heat makes it less and go for it. What else? Ibuprofen works for me. I take three of them (250s). Good luck to you, and again, so sorry you have to go through this. I know the territory! - Chris!

In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

I can really sympathize with you because I have been there and it SUCKS!! The dentist is your only hope of resolving the problem but I know it is really expensive and if you don't have insurance your really bumming. Find out if there are any Government programs that can help you. Tell them it is an emergency. It really is a serious problem because the infection could get into your bloodstream. I hope you will find help...in the meantime take 800 ml of ibuprofen ice will help because it will reduce swelling. Sleep upright to reduce pressure. Good luck
