An agnostic is someone who claims they don't know whether there is a God or not. An atheist claims that there is no God.
The a- in both of them means 'not' or 'opposite to'.

Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the value of certain claims as truth—particularly theological claims regarding the existence of God, gods, or deities—are unknown, inherently unknowable, or incoherent and thus irrelevant to life. The term and the related agnostic were coined by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1869, and are also used to describe those who are unconvinced or noncommittal about the existence of deities as well as other matters of religion. The word agnostic comes from the Greek a (without) and gnosis (knowledge). Agnosticism is not to be confused with a view specifically opposing the doctrine of gnosis and Gnosticism—these are religious concepts that are not generally related to agnosticism.
Agnostics may claim that it is not possible to have absolute or certain spiritual knowledge or, alternatively, that while certainty may be possible, they personally have no such knowledge. Agnosticism in both cases involves some form of skepticism towards religious statements. Some claim that there is nothing distinctive in being an agnostic because even theists do not claim to know God exists, only to believe it, and many even agree there is room for doubt; and atheists in the broader sense do not claim to know there is no God, only not to believe in one.

There are two definitions. The classic one is that the divine is unknowable. Gnostics believe that they have direct knowledge of the divine. Agnostics believe that it is impossible to have such knowledge.
There is also a popular defintion of being unsure about the existence of a god. Either you have belief to a certain degree or you don't. Not many consider the existence of a god to be a 50/50 chance.
Personally, I'm an atheist, which means I have no belief in any gods. That is not the same as saying that I believe gods absolutely don't exist. Anything we claim as knowledge is caveated with "To the extent that we know anything". However, an atheist has no real belief and is unconvinced of the existence of any gods.

From Webster:
Agnostic- a person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (as God) is unknown and probably unknowable; broadly : one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god
Basically, a person who is agnostic believes that it's impossible to know whether God exists. That was the definition that I was told.

An agnostic neither agrees there is a God nor denies God's existence. Most believe there is evidence that God could exist, but question if God does exist how come so many bad things happen.

An agnostic thinks it impossible to know the truth in matters such as God and the future life with which Christianity and other religions are concerned. Or, if not impossible, at least impossible at the present time.

Agnostics deny the validity of religion but do not rule out the possibility of the existence of a God.

An atheist does not believe in God. An agnostic does not believe in God or disbelieve in God. The agnostic just says, "I don't know". The atheist says, "I know. God does not exist!"
Now get some sleep. .....
