I was raised Southern Baptist. I deconverted back to the natural state of atheism after having read the Bible, studied it extensively and realized that it and all other religions I studied were not based in fact.
I didn't stop believing for a ticket to sin, or because i had a bad experience with Christians or because of the actions of Christians in any way. I stopped believing because there is no evidence and that is all that should really need to be said.. No evidence = No belief.
As far as my parents, my mom still is a devout Christian, as is everyone else in my family.
All of us have a warm feeling inside, feel at one with the universe, or just have a general feeling of being at peace sometimes. Please don't think that people from other religions or us atheists can't feel the same neurophenomenon that you do. It's a purely natural thing.

I am an atheist. I find the comments by RosieC very disturbing. The atheists I know are great people. The have very strong moral and ethical foundations. Religious belief doesn't correlate with moral behavior. Also, I was raised as a Pentecoastal Holiness, and my parents completely sold it as the only truth. I have always had trouble buying into their beliefs. My parents know that I'm an atheist, but they don't press me on it much because my mother knows it will only make me stop calling her. Actually my mom was the one who always told me there was no such things as ghosts, psychics, ESP, aliens, etc. To me, believing in a deity is the same as any other paranormal belief.

We are at a turning point in the history of mankind. Atheism, that has so influenced the world of science and thought since the 18th century, is now undergoing an inevitable collapse.
In this film you will see how the most basic assumptions of atheism collapsed with scientific, political and sociological developments in the past decades. From the theories of Charles Darwin or Sigmund Freud, to the fall of communism or the hippie dream, see how the atheist dogma falls at the dawn of the 21st century.

I am but that doesn't mean I'm a devil worshiper.I dint believe in any of it. I was raised a Catholic and went to a private Catholic school for 9 years.I'm not taking the easy way out and I dint tell my mother because it would devastate her . It would serve no purpose to tell her. I changed because of its history ,God or a higher power was born from ignorance to the sciences and astrology. What couldn't be explained had to be a message from god. Hurricanes ,tornado's ,volcanic eruptions, earth quakes ,bad crops any unseasonal weather ,the stars comets etc.We know better now .Its just us down hear. Its comforting to think that there is more than this ,but this is it.People who read the Bible interpret it for their own reasons to feel good.
Everyone is in heaven no matter how evil grandpa was because it sounds comforting. If you read the Bible it says that no one is in heaven yet ,not until the end of time on judgment day.,but that doesn't sound nice so we will change it to feel good.Would you kill your grandchild to see if your son really loves you ? Well people think when someone dies young that's its a test of your love for god or that he needed him, Sounds comforting and makes the loss easier.I guess having your children fly planes into the trade center to kill your other children makes sense too.

I think President Bush is an atheist, he does not even try to be religious, beyond saying he is, need the bible belt vote afterall, other than look at his actions.
Either that, or somehow, have genetically created what looks like a fully aged clone, but had an accident with the brain aging, not having got past the giggling bafoon stage.

I am. But my parents are Christian. I made this decision based upon how Christians contradict themselves and put down every other religion, then deny it. And (some) sects are extremely biased towards women, (like not letting them become clergy members) and won't admit to that...And the women are ok with it. It's wrong. Christianity is bullsh*t. Have a nice day.

Well said holy flusher. Anyway, yes, after seeing all of the cruel ways of 'God', the contradictions in the bible, the lack of facts and mythology of the bible I realized it was a load of crap.
You say God is love but he is anything but. He lets people burn in hell, has killed little children just to make a point or punish. Why in the world would I or want to believe in such a God?

I am an atheist and only became an atheist when I was nearly middle aged (about 40). My parents were irrelevant to that decision.

I am. There is no evidence that any god exists, only that one doesn't. For example, the existence of evil.
"did your parents encourage you?"
Did they encourage me to not believe in god? No, I was raised to believe in god.
"It is an insult to God to believe in God. For on the one hand it is to suppose that he has perpetrated acts of incalculable cruelty. On the other hand, it is to suppose that he has perversely given his human creatures an instrument--their intellect--which must inevitably lead them, if they are dispassionate and honest, to deny his existence. It is tempting to conclude that if he exists, it is the atheists and agnostics that he loves best, among those with any pretensions to education. For they are the ones who have taken him most seriously."
