You should take it in to a professional. You might damage the tape if you try to do it yourself.
This is why I purchased a dvd player.

Depending on the VCR, you can almost always unplug it and open the top by unscrewing it. This way you can keep the video in tact.

youll probably have to unscrew the cover and manually remove the tape,,,its probably stuck open and the tape is probably wrapped around the video heads,, thus know as it "eatin your tape," i just had to do this 2 days ago,, good luck its a little tedious

Either pull on the tape really, really hard...and risk breaking both or take it to your local repair store and let someone who has a clue remove it for you.

unscrew the top of it after you unplug it and you will be able to get the tape out. the tape will probably be ruined though

take a hammer, smash the vcr and take the tape out :-)
