Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Long lasting, durable, comfortable, yet can take harsh roads and environment well.
You'll have to go drive one like I did.
I did not believe these were any good either until I got a loner car Jeep GC for 2 weeks, and now I am a believer.
It got 25 mpg combined, I drove it a hard 1000 miles and I was impressed. I was rough with this car, yet it held up and it was fun to drive with lots of room. Go find one 2 years old and save a lot of money.

get a jeep wrangler, you can't kill it, I've seen them roll several times, and once back on the wheels, just start driving again like nothing happened
