its problematic -as in the movie rocky and fighting a wrestler-they are different skills-like michael jordan playing base ball-i think he could do fair in his prime but would not be prime when he did fair.

Yeah, because in his prime, the UFC was different. It wasn't hadn't yet evolved into what it is today. Back then there really were grappler versus the striker matches. Now there's not; a grappler may have started out in grappling, but has great stand-up game. The fighters really are Mixed Martial fighters with the key word being mixed.

Would Mike stand a chance in today's UFC. No way. Read Dana White's Playboy interview (previous issue, not this month's). Even he says he has a lot of respect for Mike, but Mike would never make it in the UFC.

I'd have to say no, being he has only studied one type of fighting, boxing which as may other contributers have said, is just one dimensional; punching only, while he may have the power for a knockout and have the ability to defend his face and upper body, he'd need to train for kicks and more "standing game" martial arts(like Muai Thai) and also learn the "ground game" aspects of Judo or Jujitsu. or have some form of wrestling background, particularly Greco Roman as Matt Hughes does.

UFC is a mixed martial arts competition, so to put him in a match against people who're two and even three dimensional (trained in 2 or more ground and standing game martial arts) while he only has one, he would more than likely wind up being taken in a submission within the first or second round.

sorry but nice try

If he were to enter such a competition it's safe to assume he would be able to get the best instruction and sparring partners money can buy and thus be able to improve his ground fighting skills within a reasonable time frame. So I wouldn't totally dismiss him as UFC fighter if he was in his prime and properly prepared. However, it may be a fact that he was always overrated even as a plain old boxer.

Im not sure if u knew this but Tyson is coming to Pride!!!
He is goin against a K1 fighter (cant remember his name). We all know Tyson has the power to knock the biggest and bad asses alive, but an MMA fight would give him a run for his money. No one has ever seen Tyson fight on da ground before, but im sure he is training with the best grapplers out there. Tyson is a stand up fighter, and he has what it takes to knock out anyone, but i dont think he stop someone from submitting him.

No. He was one of the most hard hitting people ever in a ring but he is one dementional. He only knows how to punch. The second it went to the ground it would be over. Plus in the UFC hevyweight class you have people who hit just as hard. And we all know He cant take many hard punches. BUt againt a tall man with long legs he would be knocked out with kicks to the legs then head. He should no chance against someone in MMA.

In a word, no. He's a powerful puncher (even now) but he was exposed as a guy with a questionable chin--KO'd by Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Razor Ruddock and most recently by second tier heavyweights like Kevin McBride and Danny Williams. Take a look at the experience of boxers who have tried MMA--Shannon Briggs has been training for MMA, but to the best of my knowledge hasn't fought. Frans Botha fought--and lost--one fight in K-1, losing by an arm bar submission. I'm being charitable calling Eric "Butterbean" Esch a boxer, but he competed both in K-1 and PRIDE. He did OK when put up against the MMA equivilent of "tomato cans" but got schooled in his PRIDE debut against a mediocre MMA fighter who he outweighed by 250 pounds. The Bean was taken down, arm barred and submitted in under 90 seconds...Bean also lost his K-1 debut by submission in under a minute(Genki Sudo was his opponent). He padded his MMA record to 6-1 heading into the PRIDE event, but has as much business fighting the top level MMA guys as my mom does.

Tyson--though a more powerful puncher than any of the aforemention pugilists--would probably suffer a similar fate. Even in his prime, he would be destroyed by the top MMA fighters today--he'd get submitted by Fedor Emelienko and have his head kicked into the next area code by Mirko "Cro Cop" Fillipovic. He'd not have much better luck against anyone in PRIDE or UFC--he'd certainly have a "puncher's chance" but no one would be stupid enough to try to fight him that way.

I'm a big fan of both MMA and boxing, so this isn't an assertion that one sport is tougher than the other. The best MMA fighters would get schooled if they threw on gloves and fought under Marquis of Queensbury rules, and the best boxers would get schooled if they tried to roll around the mat with the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueiras and Josh Barnetts of the world. They're just different sports with different rules and skill sets. It's like saying that Julius Peppers is one of the baddest dudes in the NFL, so he could throw on ice skates and dominate in the NHL. There's a reason that guys who can compete at a high level in more than one sport are extremely rare....

absolutely not he would win some fights but not against anybody with wrestling or ju jitsu experience. I am a huge Mike Tyson fan. I think he could take Muhammed Ali but he could not take Randy Couture.

NO!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Tyson is a "never was"! All he did was fight a bunch of hand-picked bums. He only fought two " real " boxers in his career and both of them destroyed him! Besides he's just a boxer, these are martial artists. He would be slaughtered and I would definitely pay to see it!
