Not in our lifetime. But if they did and you run away, then you get to stay away. If you made the mistake of coming back, get ready for some prison time.

The U.S. used a lottery draft system where if your number was picked (I don't know if you had to fill out a draft registration form at 18, but I did and there was no offical draft) you had to go into the service.

I doubt they are bringing back the draft and the idea that the military is streched thin is hog wash. There have been base closings since the '80s trying to make the military smaller. Also only about 10% of the U.S. active military members are in Iraq and Afganistan. The reason why some outfits have had multiple duties is because they were trained to fight in the desert and because those with experience tend to survive better than the newbies. Some are probably volunteering to return for the extra pay and quicker promotions.

I sure hope so. I think it is the responsability of every citizen at the age of 18 to do 1 year of military service. The country provides freedom for everybody, so everyone should be expected to put their part on the effort, unless that person is in high school, University, or has a physical condition that prevents them.

A person that dodges the draft will go to jail for some time and recieve a felony on their permanent record. If the draft is impossed, which I do not believe will be, and you are too scared to go to the military, join the Coast Guard, they nearly never do international work.

If the US continues to pursue a course of trying to force its concept of government on people of other cultures then the day will come, not too far off, when the draft will have to be reinstated to bring the Army troop strength up to 5 or 6 million.

If you try to run to avoid the draft you will be found eventually and jailed for draft evasion. If you are at all a pretty girly-boy, after you have been in the slammer a week the draft will suddenly look like a much better alternative.

NO!!!! They did away with the draft in 1973 and the volunteer military is excellant. If they had the draft and you ran away, you had better make sure you leve the country, because they will come looking for you and it means prison and disgrace. The draft works on a lottery type system by giving you a number.

Well, no I don't think it will be anytime soon, they have a lot of volunteers for that right now. But, when it comes to the draft the way they did it before is they drew birth dates, then you would be given a date to go. If you ran away, and got away you would be fine but if you got caught it was classified AWOL. And you would go to military prison for as long as they saw fit. Now if you sign up and don't ship out the same thing happens but it's usually only for 2-3 months. Then they give you a dishonorable discharge, which makes it damn near impossible to get a job!!!

Look up selective service. You turn 18 you become eligible cannon fodder. You can be drafted to serve your country. It is unlikely that the draft will be reinstated without a serious threat to the US, or the invasion of Iran or North Korea.
In nam you could run away to Canada and seek sanctuary, the wimp Carter granted the draft dodgers amnesty and they could return to the US. Laws were passed recently that closes the Canadian loophole, if you run to Canada the US can still haul you back.

They probably won't bring back the draft. But do you want to know a surprising fact. Military Enlistments since 9/11 have dropped, not risen. Where has everyones patriotism gone?

If the US would fight like they did during world war two, they would start a draft. Problem is they never send enough troops now a days, which just prolongs this conflicts. Just imagine if Rumsfeld sent in 500,000 soldiers to Iraq...that place would be safe and orderly, spewing ton of Oil into the USA.
Anyhow if a draft starts and you run away, they'd track you down and put you in jail.

There will not be a Draft unless and until there are not enough volunteers. All branches are meeting or exceeding enlistment quotas now.

I can't run away. My nature does not allow it.

I enlisted before, and I will again before they send a kid who won a lottery.
I may be a granddad but I can still make the cut.

I guess after the reserves run out they just "randomly" start picking people. Well, if they find you they can't put you in jail, they need you right?! Who knows how they pick people, i mean truly? And if this war on terrorism ends the way it's been "ending" these last few years then more than likely the draft will be coming up soon.
