My friend, Emily, just broke up with her boyfriend of 2 years and whenever I try to cheer her up, she turns away. She is usually very happy. When I tell her that she should'nt be sad anymore she says I'm not. I'm really worried about her. I love my friend, and I want the very best for her. What should I do (and don't say don't ask)?

Likely one of the reasons she was so happy was because she was in a fairly good relationship and probably had marriage and starting a family on her agenda. Now that things have changed, she is probably going over the past relationship to figure out what caused the break-up - and how they could have handled things differently.

A 2 yr dating relationship is a fairly long and she may need some time and space to reorganize her life.
Let her recover at her own pace and don't bring up the failed relationship (with their memories), instead when you're with her talk about and suggest new fun activities that will keep her mind off the past and busy on the bright future.

Let her grieve in peace. After all she had a bad shock. She will come around eventually but you must show some compassion in the meantime.

She sounds like a downer. Lose her and find another friend.
