I used to swim competitively, if you are trying to improve your speed practice swimming with resistance. If you need something you can do out of the water try doing exercises that mimic the motions you use for the stroke you are trying to improve. An example would be, for free style or back stroke lay on your back with your legs straight about six inches above the ground and do flutter kicks. This will strengthen your legs and abs. For breast stroke use an exercise band (giant rubber band) and practice the breast stroke with the band around your back and again with it around something in front of you so you can get resistance in both directions.

If you can practice in the water, use kick board and swim laps using only your legs. Then holding a small flotation device between your legs, use only your arms to swim laps. This will help to strengthen both your arms and legs.

A small simple thing we used to do to help improve our speed for race days was to wear more than one bathing suit or body suits when we practiced, this caused some resistance against the water and our bodies, then come race day we would swim a little faster because we glided through the water with less resistance (I know it sounds stupid but it worked, everyone did it).

Good Luck!

Well, my guess is, if you take swimming out of being a swimmer, then that'd make you an anchor.

Usually peopele that swim often, for highschool teams and college...ect. their arm muscles actually become "flatter"....like a paddle / oar. Soem people just naturally swim and run fast. Other people gain speed through being taught improvements on their technique, others work like crazy....then there are those like me, that no matter what....will go no faster, no matter how hard we may try.

Mostly visualization. You are a dolphin, a shark. You love the water, it is source. It is mother ocean. Call upon cellular memory, all the rest, stretching, instinctive range of motion training etc. for whatever stroke feels right and effective for you will come naturally. Once you realize the water is your second home. Don't drive and strive to do all this right, just be what you once were. A creature of the sea!

Keep water resistance to a minimum in forward movement and maximum in backward movement. When you move your arms forward do most of the forward movement above the water. When you kick your feet keep them below the water. Cup your hands to capture water and use it to pull yourself forward as your arms go backward instead having your fingers open and letting water pass through. Take deep breaths and try to coordinate them into the rythm of your arm movements so you aren't stopping in mid-armstroke to lift your head and take a breath.
