It's a good question. For me, the positive thought has to be something that I know to be true or I won't use it. If I tried to tell myself at 63 y/o, that I'm young and handsome, that would be self delusion.

If you're pointing out that many people who preach positive thinking are encouraging self delusion with some of the affirmations they suggest; yes they are, and I hate it when I hear them do that.

That being said, I have problems with negative thinking and using positive thinking techniques are helpful when I catch myself in a cycle of negative thinking.

When you finally begin to come out of it and realize that you are not thinking properly. I am Bipolar and have psychotic episodes however I do not remember them after they are over. I don't know when i am that way but everyone else does. It really sucks. I always think that i am doing fine until my boyfriend tells me that i am not. So i guess when I am feeling positive i become psychotic which in turn is kinda the same as being self delusional.

When a person is aspiring to achieve something completely beyond his/her ability or capacity. We have to dream big but need to be realistic as well.

When all that a person does is aspire and plan on accomplishing things but does not actually act upon them. Positive thinking without acting upon them is just plain daydreaming.
