Raw egg yolks do not have salmonella, it is the raw egg whites that have all of the protein, but also all of the possible salmonella. It is a common misconception. So a raw egg yolk in some milk is fine. She wont be getting protein, but she will be getting other nutrients such as omega-3 and DHA/ARA. For the best yolks, use only organic eggs - they come from hens that have been given an all-vegetarian, no hormones, no antibiotic diet.

I mean - how may times have we eaten sunny-side up eggs? the white NEEDS to be cooked, but the yolk can be raw.

Yes, eating raw eggs are dangerous since they can give you salmonella.

Disease-causing salmonellae have recently been re-classified into a single species, Salmonella enterica, which has numerous strains or serovars. Salmonella Typhi is a well known serovar that causes typhoid fever. Other salmonellae are frequent causes of foodborne illness, and can especially be caught from poultry and raw eggs and more generally from food that has been cooked or frozen, and not eaten straight away. It can also be caught by handling reptiles, such as iguanas or terrapins, which commonly host the Salmonella bacteria. In March 2006, The New York Times reported that the U.S. government said that 16.3% of all chickens were contaminated with salmonella. In the mid to late 20th century, Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis was a common contaminant of eggs. This is much less common now with the advent of hygiene measures in egg production and the vaccination of laying hens to prevent salmonella colonisation. Many different salmonella serovars also cause severe diseases in animals other than human beings.

After bacterial infections, reactive arthritis (aka Reiters Syndrome) can develop.

There is a possibility of Salmonella but I grew up on eggnog when I was very young and it was made with fresh raw eggs. Also, I have eaten fresh raw eggs as part of the way Steak Tartar is also served and I have also had raw eggs in a genuine Cesar Salad and I never got sick and am still alive.I think this whole Salmonella thing is way overblown.

Yeah, I think the consesus is that you should NOT give her raw eggs. Especially a young child whose immune system is not fully developed yet. This COULD kill your child. I AM a nurse, and I would NEVER tell someone to give thier child raw eggs. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard today.

That nurse is misleading you. Egg is protein and there is other ways of getting protein in the diet. It is very dangerous to eat raw eggs. the danger of salmonella is very real. At the age of two, I would not be worried about enough eggs in her diet. Ask your doctor and do not give that baby raw eggs.-------please
