Honda Civic.
Better than all the rest in so many ways.
Motor Trends car of the year 2006.
Consumer Reports - best pick.
Canadian Car of the Year 2006.
The 2007 will have a sedan Si model.
The Accord is great, too, but a lot more expensive.
They both come in hybrid models, too, if you're into that.

According to the most recent (released SEPT. '06) J.D. Power study of( vehicles on the road for 3 years) reliability & dependability...I will list for you (most reliable 1st) all the Makes in order. Well ...my list will only be of the makes that came in ABOVE the industry average.
1--Lexus
2--Mercury
3--Buick
4--Cadillac
5--Toyota
6--Acura
7--Honda
8--Jaguar
9--BMW
10-Infinity
11-Lincoln
12-Ford
13 Oldsmobile
ALL the rest (37 makes listed) were rated BELOW the industry average.
So pick a vehicle from the list that suits YOUR individual needs, & budget.....
Every other answerer here will tell which vehicle suits THEIR needs, wants, budget... Opinions vs Facts !
THEY are not going to be useing YOUR car !
Nor will they be paying for it or giving you a 'loaner' when your vehicle is in the shop.

There's no definitive answer to this, alot of makes out there have an overall amazing reliability. Ontop of this list however, there is the Honda Accord as mentioned, any Toyota and Lexus, and newer model Hyundai's which have amazing quality fo the money.

Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans are the top 3.
Hondas are the most expensive of the three and the least discounted.... Nissan is the least expensive and the most discounted.
My family owns all three and they are all extremely reliable. But I think Hondas are the most fun to drive, the styling, handling and resale value give them a slight edge in my mind.

I hate to say it (as my father, husband, and brothers all work for GM) is a honda civic (most reliable non hybrid, I think) and you can buy a new one for about $300.00 a month or you can find deals for used for 199./month, but remember they do have a 10 year warranty unlike GMs 3 yr.

Almost any car that is well-maintained and cared for will be reliable. Choose a model with the fewest options. With fewer options, if it's stripped down, there's less that can go wrong.

impossible to put it down to one car..but if i had to I would say it would be most of the Toyota's...take a look around and see how many old Corolla's there are out there, ask the owners of them and i'm sure they will say they have been relatively problem free... as for current vehicles they have to take the test of time.
