What should I do to get it to turn off?

First go check to see if the gas cap is still there. If it is take it off and put it back on. If that doesn't work, take the cap off again and spray around where the gas cap is with some carb cleaner. This will loosen the sensor up . If all else fails put the cap back on and give it a fairly hard tap. That should reset the sensor.

Make sure the gas cap is fully tightened. If that doesn't do it, try a new gas cap. If THAT doesn't fix it, there's probably a loose line in the vapor recovery system. Once the problem is resolved, it should go off all by itself.

I HATE that on Fords! My escort had the service engine light turn on due to a semi-loose gas cap, and I had to have my lights reset to make it turn off.

I think there's a way to disconnect certain lights, but you'd have to ask a mechanic about it.

Disconnect the battery for a minute, hook it back and light should be off. If it keeps coming back on, the car has a vapor leak, or the computer on the car needs to be re-calibrated

Try unhooking the battery for 1 min first.
