I saw a special about this recently I think it had something to do with a company let me go look for it. It is the first initials of the companies that sold it from what I recall because it was very important they put it on and put it on right so copiers would not take away their market of well made chocolates. It was so important they would cull the ones not printed correctly
The M&M®/Mars Company claims that combined sales of all the M&M' varieties makes it the best ... What did consumers say about m&m's when they were first made? What are they saying about m&m's now?
It was a special on chocolate on the History channel let me go look around possibly Mars I remember Mars and someone else who merged with them cannot remember other than how important it was to place those letters correctly and the chocolatier wars. Pretty interesting stuff. Oh and for whomever asked about twinkies they are baked.
The associate I believe was his own son possibly cannot remember.

M&M stands for Mars & Murrie. These were the people (Forrest Mars Sr & R. Bruce Murrie) who bought the rights to sell Smarties (the same thing but what they call them in the UK) in America but someone was already using the name Smarties there as well so they went for M&M... such a sweet story!
