Advantage: If you use pheromones to attract insects that are considered pests (for example, for crops), you don't need to apply insecticides, avoiding environmental pollution.

Disadvantage: Pheromones are more expensive than pesticides. You need a lot of female insects to extract tiny quantities of pheromones. You can also place traps with female insects (alive) to attract male insects, but anyway it is expensive.

the best way is to release sterile males. They still release the pheromones and all the mating takes place, but... they're sterile.
