I would say to get a litter that is clumping. It works really well so when you clean the litter box it all comes out, not just the poo.

I have 5 cats,4 litter boxes, in a two bedroom townhouse and there's no hint of litter box odor. I've tried them all, but am SO very happy with Fresh Step Cedar, and no, it doesn't have a cedar scent, and it clumps great..
Tracking has been a problem with every litter I just put a throw rug under the box and shake the litter back in. They do sell special mats - I've seen them at PetSmart that are made to help spread their paw pads so the litter will stay on the mat.

I find everyone has different preferences. There's several brands I quite enjoy and most are quite good to live with. Personally I find the best for controlling smell is Max Cat's multi cat clumping formula. Another good one is Arm and Hammer's clumping litter. It comes with Arm and hammer's baking soda included. I also enjoy Johnny cat. None of these brands are spectacular when it comes to controlling tracking. I find I have to sweep regularly because if I don''t, they're dragged across the apartment from bird room to kitchen. For tracking, the Silicone crystal litters you can get are wonderful but they aren't the greatest for odor control. Generally the more money you spend the better the product controls smell. I have this one brand that costs $20 for a 40 pound bag but it's awesome for smell and clumps well. I find most of Purina's brands are very good and I would recommend you try some of them out if price is a concern :-) .
Good luck!

Careful! Changing litter can cause litterbox problems.
Compare different kinds of litter that meet your criteria, buy small bags and try each one, choose the litter that best fits your needs and one the cat will consistenly use.
If you choose a scoopable litter, it should be scooped everyday.
If you choose a clay litter, you don't need to use as much, but it must be changed everyday. In either case litterboxes should be thoroughly cleaned once a week with a mild detergent and air dried.
Baking soda added to any litter will help keep the odors down.

Fresh Step Clay Cat Litter. have used it for over 2 years and absolutly love it! I wouldn't try any other brand at all. I don't like all those brands of cat litter with "sandy" litter. Fresh Step is made with big chunks of litter and is formulated with a special odor control. buy the bag, not the box. the bag has the chunks which I like. I've never had a problem with this cat litter and my cats couldn't be any better at using their box. I would recommend this to anyone!! Good Luck! =^-^=

Fresh Step is very good we have used it for years-the clumping kind. As for the tracking it out that is hard to remedy all together. The track pad catches a lot of it and getting a certain kind of litter box is another big help.

I just discovered silica gel crystals. I bought it at walmart they were pretty cheap. They come in a bag and is called "Mimi Litter" It is little blue and white crystal things- not big like the ones in the jug. I have 4 cats and no smell and way less litter tracking. Good Luck.

you can buy a gel type pebble that will help to reduxce the odour. if you have a small outdoor area, mix some of the soil into her normal litter and soon she will go outside to the garden area to do her business and then you can just keep the litter tray in at night.

Try Feline Pine. Its better for your cats than any clay or silica based litter, and better for the environment too. And no smell! You do have to keep up with the scooping, though.

Shredded up news paper with a little baking soda. The ink absorbs the water and the baking soda kills the smell.
