I just remember years ago trying to buy a saint's medal for a friend's birthday. I walked into many, many "Christian" bookstores, only to end up getting a bunch of seriously hateful anti-Catholic lectures. And I'm not even Catholic; I was just shopping for a Catholic friend. Let's just say that it didn't give me a good picture of the industry as a whole.
Oh, yeah...and about a decade after that, I tried to find a Book of Common Prayer in some so-called Christian stores. Couldn't find a single salesperson who even knew what it was. It just seems to me that a bookstore that caters to Christians would have sales staff that were conversant about more types of Christianity than simply Fundamentalism.

I like the product selection at the national chain Christian book stores (LIFEWAY) but the personell are not very knowledgeable about thier products. The Independent stores dont have the selection but know what they do have or can order for you. Walmart is not a good source for my needs as a youth minister but I have found a few books there

The only Christian retail stores I have in my area sell decorated bibles and Jesus themed wallpaper and other various Christianity themed decorative products. I have yet to go in one, as I wouldn't want or need anything sold there, however, the woman who runs one of these stores yells at the kids who loiter outside the coffee shop next door. I think that's rather funny, but really, I don't really have personal experience regarding the service in Christian retail stores.

Good question - I live in the LA area with lots of Christian stores. Some have excellent service (Lighthouse in Long Beach). As far as leaving secular stores, that would require that Christian stores carry everything I needed (I can't remember ever seeing shampoo in a Christian store)...but unfortunately it would also have to be similar in price and convenience.

Of course Walmart does not normally carry Christain ideas.
Normally I have found poor service in most Christian book stores. The clerks hang out at the cash register. Or there is never more than two people there and both hang out up front or one is in the back.

I much prefer Christian bookstores.....When I'm looking for a particular subject, they can always help me....forget Walmart...they never have a good selection or knowledge. Secular bookstores have no knowledge of Christian books and or tapes. As for other books I love Books A Million.

I noticed a lot of things are very high priced in these stores. The people usually seem very nice and the layouts are great.

Christian this; Christian that; I wonder when they're gonna start on a Christian Ghetto. Have ye never read; The cattle on a thousand hills, is mine.
