I had them with my dinner tonight - and I thought that I detected a little bit of sugar. I had them at my school cafeteria, so I'm guessing they are mass-produced. I don't know what brand, another words.

But is it typical to have a little sugar in onion ring batter?

Actually, yes, sometimes. I used to work at Sonic Drive-inn and one of the things I did was make onion rings. There are 3 different batters we used the first is not sweet you mix it with water to moisten the onions, the second was like pancake powder almost and it was very sweet, then they went back in the 1st batter, then in the 3rd which was like bread crumbs and not too sweet. But most recipes don't call for sugar.
