A medical doctor will help you so I also would advise you to start with that one.

First off if you think your problems are caused mostly by your lifestyle then your just might need to see a therapist. A therapist will talk to you and help you find a way out of your turbulent lifestyle.
If it is more severe and seems to have no source then you need more. If you get upset or anxiety from the smallest things or everyday things then you probably need medication and therapy. A psychiatrist can prescribe medication and talk therapy, but primarily just medication. A therapist can't prescribe medication but will give you in depth sessions.
Most people find the best solution is to have both, however if you can only manage to have only one, then it should definitely be a psychiatrist. They can prescribe medication and diagnosis you with whatever condition you have and treat it.

A psychiatrist IS a medical doctor, who might prescribe drugs as treatment. The effects tend to be immediate. However, once you stop taking meds, your anxiety-filled obsessions will return. And anxiolytic medications have very unpleasant side effects.
On the contrary, psychological therapy (by a psychologist, no drugs) tends to have more lasting benefits for people with anxiety, though the effect is not as immediate as medical treatment. I would recommend going to a psychologist first.

A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medications. A psychologist can't. A medical doctor with a specialty other than psychiatry could prescribe meds but the psychiatrist would be much more familiar with your condition.

You should go to a psychiatrist if you feel that you need meds because a psychologist is not able to write prescriptions only a psychiatrist. Chances are that your medical doctor will send you to a psychiatrist for help anyways.

If medication is what you seek, then consulting with a psychologist or psychiatrist while still seeing your primary care doctor would be a good choice. However, you may wish to consider psychotherapy for your obsessions. The best choice would be to meet with a cognitive behavioral therapist who speacializes in anxiety disorder treatment.

You should start with your regular M.D. who can either prescribe the meds. for you or refer you to a psychiatrist (a doctor of psychiatric medicine) who can. Psychologists are not medical doctors and therefore cannot legally write scripts.

Depending on your health coverage you may need to go to your medical doctor first and get a referral for a psychiatrist. Hope you seek help soon. Take care.

See a clinical psychologist. They'll be best able to diagnose what's going on with you and decide a course of therapy. If your insurance requires a referral your MD can probably hook you up. Just talk to him about the symptoms you're experiencing.
