The preceding answer is correct. However, the Supreme Court is, actually the court of original jurisdiction (for a very few cases), such as disputes between state entities (almost always boundary disputes). When that happens, the Court (in its authority) appoints a referree, who then conducts the case, and makes a "recommendation" to the Court, which enters findings of fact (the same as a verdict), conclusions of law, and judgment. These cases are very rare.

A verdict is reached at the trial court.

The appellate and supreme courts review rules of law, and issue holdings either affirming or overturning (vacating) the verdict, or most often remanding (sending back) the case for the trial court to fix.
