I guess I was a little rough with this lens. Can the mount be changed to a metal mount on this lens? How much would it cost?

If the lens was dropped, you could have whacked the elements out of alignment, too. In this case a repair could cost more than the lens is worth. (Can't say for sure because I've never heard of the 70-240, but with a plastic mount ...)
If you're pretty sure it's just the mount, this sounds like a DIY job. Get the cheapest, most beat up Nikon lens with a metal mount you can find at a garage sale/ 2nd hand store/ eBay, and get to it.

Depends on the damage. If it's the mount that broke, could be done. If it's the lens barrel that's damaged, toss it.
