My dog is 15 and it seems overnight she has acted really strange, this behavior has been going on now for 6 months and I have taken her to the vet who put her doggie prozac. She constantly has to be near us, literally almost causes accidents by standing so close, we almost trip over her she gets herself inter -twined in all sorts of extention cords toppling things over and if we put her outside, we wake up to a huge mess, she will tear into our potting soil and have it all over the place not to mention herself and she knocks over all my plants, and just plucked out all my cactus I put in last week, she gets herself in a room and closes the door behind her then cant get out then she will scratch the walls and doors until someone comes and saves her. She has scratched the paint off the outside of the house also, she is destroying my property, she has never ever been a bad dog until 6 months ago, proazac not helping much any suggestions???I dont want to put her down

Sounds like she is just getting old. My dog just turned 17. I comment that she is getting senile. She will go outside and bark at nothing. Sometimes she will look like she is barking (opens her mouth and throws her head back) but nothing comes out.
She has started getting into the garbage right in front of me. She is constantly underneath me. I turn around and she's right there. She trips on things now and then too. She also messes in the house now and then. (she's never done that)
But, there are times that she runs and jumps across the lawn like she's a puppy.

I dont really know what to tell you as far as medical treatment. ( I myself am not big on pumping them full of drugs) I also can't see putting her to sleep if it is just an inconvienence. I figure, with my dog at least, once she gets to the point where she cannot stand or get up, or she has no quality of life, then I will have her put down. She will let me know when that time is. Until then, I just deal with it, give her all the attention I can and wait and see what happens.

Good luck.

Your question describes what most dogs who've been close to their human companions most of their lives, and then are all of a sudden sorta pushed in the back...but unless you made some major change in her life, I wouldn't know what shes doing it for, unless she does have dementia...

you could try playing music to her, or using baby monitors and speaking to her while she's in another room

A friend of mine put her dog on Focus Factor. She told me that it did seem to help him some.
Since then, I heard that a lot of people are trying it on their dogs.

Dogs certainly can "suffer" dementia. Any organism with a brain can suffer dementia.
