I do this all the time. Buy some bottled water, and then when I drink all the water, refill the bottle with tap water. When that water is gone, or old, I dump it out, and refill it again. I do this for a while. I just read on some Yahoo! article that you shouldn't do this unless the bottle is made for "reuse." I can't imagine it could be that bad...but does anybody know if this is a bad thing to do, and if so, why?

is possable but if you wash it occationally it should be fine. plus you have an imune system for a reason. if your never exposed to germs , when germs do come along you'll be screwed.

First off, it is a shame that the world has come to use cheap plastic for packing and storage. There have been tests that have concluded that plastic releases petrol- substances that act like estrogens that throw of hormonal activity in both male and females. They discovered this with the problems that small pets were having, until they realized that the plastic water and food dishes were the source of many problems. The small size of the creatures compared to humans allowed the effects to take place much more rapidly and to a greater extent than in a larger child/adult. Re-using bottled water containers are a bad idea, because they are cheaper one-time containers meant to serve a short-life purpose. It is best to get a number 7 in a little triangle on the bottom of the container. There is another designation that I have forgotten. Number 7 plastic containers are much more inert and do not break down & transfer these substances to the food it stores. The worst things about commercial plastic is that it reacts even more so to liquids that have a high acidic content, allowing for more leaching of undesirable substances into your water or beverage. Another thing I often see is, whether NEW or RE-USED, having the bottle set in the sun while enjoying the outdoors, exercising or just setting in a car's sunlit, high-temp environment, as this makes for an even more rapid and intense leaching of petrol-synthetic substances into the liquid. I have even been told by some fairly reputable sources that re-using them as ice packs and emergency water is even a bad idea, because it causes this leaching also. I re-use these sometimes as ice packs in my coolers, but have only drank the melted water as a very last resort when I need some water in an unusual situation. I have tried to tell people this sometimes when I see them using anything but number 7 containers at water filling stations, but it appears that most people think I am goofy or just a character......I want to help, but it doesn't come across well no matter how nice I try to be about being concerned for their welfare. Now, if i decide to try and inform them, I just figure they had a chance to learn something important for their family's health and wellbeing, now it is up to them to research or give a damn by being a better informed consumer. I have read that one part per BILLION of a hormonal type substance can cause a reaction in the human body. However, with food, water and marketed consumables, they are allowed to have up to, i believe, 100 parts per MILLION of something bad in it which is definitely a much higher concentration than needed to affect your bodily functions. Since this does not affect, disable or kill you immediately, there is no concern, but over time undesirable symptoms occur that may not be easily addressed as the source is overlooked since these substance are entered into our bodies slowly and at very low doses, not to mention the accumulation of many different substances that may interact with each other for a very disastrous synergistic effect on our well-being. Consumer beware and become well informed as to what you are eating, drinking and exposing yourself and loved ones to, not everything is what it appears to be with all hype and marketing done in competing for your spending dollars.

I have heard that reusing the bottles can allow bacteria to breed, buy if you wash them then that won't happen. I would rather wash and reuse our water bottles, because I feel it is a good way to recycle. We really get our use out of them before we toss them.

I imagine because of the bacteria that might grow on the bottle.

Frankly, if the bottle is sealed well and kept clean, I don't really see a problem with it. I reuse bottles a lot to keep water in case of a power outage.

I have read the same thing you read. They claim that the water is not clean , but if it already filtered why is it not clean? I think they just want to sell more plastic bottles that take years to decompose.

bacteria collects on the mouth part of the bottle, so it becomes unhealthy to repeatedly use the same bottle unless you wash it with hot water and soap

i have also heard that germs are the reason that you shouldn't reuse the water bottle. i guess it's understandable. kinda like sipping an unwashed cup constantly

I do it all the time, but I actually wash the bottle in between, unless I am doing multiple fills in the same day. If the bottle was safe the 1st time, it is safe the 2nd, 3rd.......

I think we live in a society of neurotic people.

It's a very bad thing to do because it keeps you from buying more bottled water and THAT's bad for the economy. (Per bottled water companies, of course!!) 30 years ago we hadn't heard of bottled water and folks didn't drop dead from germs that I recall. There are a great many things in this world on which we spend money because we have money, not because it makes any sense whatever.
