Some people seem shocked when their religion is attacked or mocked. What made them think they were above that in the first place? Why do people seem to think their beliefs are on home-base, so to speak? I don't make fun of funny looking people, because they can't help that, but when they choose to live their lives according to mythology, it's open season, right?

Don't be ridiculous! Christians have always been persecuted by non believers. It's Satan's way. It only goes to push true Christians to higher levels.

Because everyone deserves basic respect for their beliefs or lack thereof.
The "Ill respect you when you respect me..." shtick only works if someone is gracious enough to go first. Therefore it is better to simply start off with courtesy.
Being respectful does not mean you are agreeing with that person or his beliefs. It just means you are offering the same respect you would expect for yourself.
Asking another person to live as you want to live is selfish. This would include asking them to live without "mythology"

Sure. Go ahead, make fun of me. It doesn't bother me. Of course I prefer an outright debate, but do as you wish. I am used to it. OHHH and most arguements won't hold up long against me. I have interesting beliefs.

Well, they may expect respect when they respect others, but when they don't, THEN it is open season.

Maybe because we expect to be treated the same way you'd treat anyone else?
