Religions are used by the powerful to keep their pockets full. This is why it seems religion is the core of war but it really isn't. Greed is the core of war and what better tool than religion to supply the human fodder for the relentless war machine...

Because people fail to realize that this world is actually ruled by Satan the Devil. When he was cast down from heaven Jesus said Woe to the earth and to those residing it because the devil has been cast down to you knowing he has a short period of time left.
When Satan was tempting Jesus in the wilderness he offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the heavens if he would fall down an do an act of worship to him. Satan could not have offered these Kingdoms if they did not belong to him and Jesus never denied they did.
2 Corinthians 4:4- god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers that the illumination of the glorious good news about Christ, who is the image of God might not shine through.
Satan knows he will soon be destroyed by God and he wants as many people as possible to be destroyed with him so he is working as hard as he can to cause there to be no unity no peace no morals and to make people question God. It all works good in his plans. As long as Satan is ruler of this wicked world there will not be any peace.

You are missing a great big point..
Man was never meant to live without God right beside him and guiding him. Man sinned and is flawed and not capable of making the right decisions. Religion is not the answer, Jesus is the answer and when he rules in this world then we will have world peace. Meantime this is the best that man can do without God. Enjoy what you have because man is about to mess it all up. N. Korea is now entering the nuclear arena, chalk up a big one for mankind, when Iran enters that will be another big one.. What a wonderful future we have to look forward to when man does his own thing without God..

Jesus is called the Prince of Peace and he is coming back to take over again and then we will have peace. Until then:
Rev 6:4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

It's not unachievable.
It's that man cannot do it.
Soon the Kingdom of God will end all wars by destroying man's governments.

Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.

Isa 2:4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

1Co 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
1Co 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
1Co 15:27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
1Co 15:28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

It's only unachievable as long as most people believe it is unachievable. Almost everyone wants peace, yet strangely, most people believe it's unachievable because of... (name your favorite nationality, race, political party, etc.).

Religions are not a bar to world peace. Only religions that think they are the One True Way, and that try to enforce their beliefs on everyone else.

It is achievable, but not perfect. Human nature has many competing interest and most center around self preservation. Religions are not the culprit of violence, I think human nature has greater influence.
Religion actually reduces the selfishness and self-centered behavior.
I mean really, think of the cave men and the ancient people are not really the idyllic specimen of nonviolent humanity?!

It's because God is not always the focus of certain religions. If He were then we would be in a better state as far as World Peace and loving thy neighbour as thyself.

Because people must make peace within themselves before we can extend it to others.

Walking with Christ helps one to realize that peace among unpeaceful people is difficult--and also helps one to work to eradicate inner strife. What I do is work on the problem--my own inner strife. That is, if I want peace on a broader scale, I must first find peace in myself. Because if I don't have it to give away, how am I even going to begin to try to spread it?

Because they are religous, religion doesn't bring anyone peace. Mankind has been destined to be at war with himself since Adam.
Only Christ can bring true peace, men cannot.
