It seems many theists think atheists are just ignoring.....wait

Many Christians think atheists are just ignoring God so they can do what they want to do. I don't know what other theists think, so "others" please chime in if you have an opinion. What the heck are atheists thinking?

"Many Christians think atheists are just ignoring God so they can do what they want to do."

And what most of us do and want to do, is obey the law, work hard for ourselves and our families and be good, honest citizens.
Which is more than most christians can say...

Interestingly, Christians make up about 75% of the US population and 75% of the US prison population. Atheists make up about 10% of the US population... but they only make up 0.2% of the US prison population. That means that an atheist is 50 TIMES LESS likely to be incarcerated than a Christian. Pretty strange, for a group that has no god-given guiding moral principals, huh?

I can think of two possibilities that might reasonably account for this disparity:

1. Atheists of a higher ethical and moral caliber than Christians, and thus do not do the same kinds of nasty things that land so many Christians in jail; or,

2. Atheists are, overall, a lot smarter than Christians and thus, they are less likely to get caught in the course of their transgressions.

Take your pick.

I'm an atheist....but I have my own code of morals & ethics.

I don't smoke or drink except for an occassional glass of wine
I've been married & in love with to the same man for over 30 years
I don't cheat on my income tax
I waited for 9 years after I was married to have a child
I don't do drugs
I own my own home plus a few rental properties
I took in a friend of my daughter when her family put her out
I am very close to my extended family who are all Christians
I very rarely drive over the speed limit
I give to 3 charities every month when I pay my bills

ETC.

How many Christians can say all that?

On the contrary, I believe some atheists want to take up responsibility for shaping the society rather than to leave things unattended and outdated -- just like some scriptures are.

The sad part is that some theists keep getting in their way with old modes of thinking by claiming exclusive truth and control to all -- except for evil and sin. Changes are difficult enough with rational resistance and the theists added irrational ones on top of them.

Unless people raise many many many levels of social consciousness, it is difficult to imagine any form of communication with the ultimate consciousness -- for they are prohibited by theists to think in that level to begin with.

Being atheist doesn't mean that you are a bad person, or that you do bad things, just the same as someone who believes in God may not be perfect either. Moral responsibility is something that is taught to you by respected adults. You can be a horrible person and still have a deep faith in any organized religion, or a good person that does not believe that there is one, or any supreme beings to watch, love, and govern us.

You're questions are interesting, I will give you that. I don't think that about athiests. I believe God calls you to Him when the time is right. Some athiests have not had the opportunity yet. Some ignore it because it can be scary. It's a hard thing to grasp if the Holy Spirit hasn't "moved" you to believe. How can someone believe in something that is not there if they can't feel it in their hearts that it is real and alive?

Morality is just another name for a set of beliefs. While almost all religions have a moral code, many cultures do as well.

So, it's completely possible to follow a moral code, and still not believe in any type of supreme being.

I think atheists are being honest, but the hard-core ones can be just as bad as the hard-core religious and be downright vicious.
