Vegetables are steamed by boiling water and cooking the vegetables in the steam generated from the boiling water. It is important to make sure that the water you use is free of pollutants. If you have unhealthy water to begin with, the pollutants will concentrate as the water is boiled away and can get into your vegetables. If you are unsure about your tap water, use purified or bottled water when steaming vegetables.

Water is not the only liquid that can be used when steaming. Many people like adding some lemon juice, wine, soy sauce, or other liquids to the water to add flavor to the vegetables. I often times throw in a fresh sprig of thyme, rosemary, or other herb. A slice of onion or garlic also adds a mellow flavor to the dish.

There are several ways to steam vegetables. You can microwave, counter steamer or on the stove top. Below are a few sites with products for steaming. Also there is a site link that has a list of vegetable steaming time suggestions. On the stove top you can use a bamboo steamer, collapsible steamer baskets that sit on the bottom of the pot, or a steamer insert that rests above the pot.

But each method the water is heated below the vegetables and is covered to trap heat and steam. The vegetables never are never submerged in the water. That would be boiling vegetables.

I prefer my steamed veggies to be seasoned with salt and pepper with a little bit of olive oil or butter. After they are removed from stearming

I've done this before without a steamer. Take a big boilingpot and fill maybe 1/4 of the way with water. Add 1 tsp. of salt. Take a collinder and put it in the pot and keep it over the water. Cover the pot and put stove on high. Let it sit about 10-12 minutes. Move the veggies around sparatically.

Get some good green leafy vegetables, brocholi, asparagus, artichokes, carrots (not green) and cut them up into a size that would fit into the palm of a childs hand. Boil water using 1 tsp salt. Gradually add the vegetables to the area in the pot between the top of the boiling water and the cover.

You do it in the microwave. Put the veggies in a dish and cover with a wet paper towel.

Or.

Fill a sauce pan about 1/2 full with water heat until nearly boiling and set a steam basket in the pan (the basket bottom should be just at the water level). Load up with your veggies and cover with a lid.
