i have over 20 hours under the needle and i would have to say that the best way for someone to understand, would be to go to a reputable tat shop and watch and ask the artist questions. You will find that a lot of tat shop artist are willing to show you what the needles look like and how they work.

The tattoo guns hold anywhere between something like 5 and 40 needles, depending on the gun and the purpose. The size of the needles depends on the purpose. Cosmetic tattoos often use much thinner needles. Regular tattoos use thicker needles to get more ink in. The needles piercing the skin forces ink into the skin.

tatt guns work like sewing machines, the needles move up & down. the tat guns adjust to different depth settings to penetrate the skin. you have outline needles & fill needles, the outline needles make finer lines. some use stencils, apply them to your skin & then follow the lines, some are great free handers.
