By nature, girls are ready for the classroom before boys are. By nature girls mentally mature sooner than boys.
I am 51 with aadd. Maybe they did not know what attention deficient disorder was when I was growing up.
I did not do good in school, yet my IQ is above normal.
When I got a little out of hand with energy, ------no drugs for me, my mom just whipped the livin' hell out of me.
I'm not saying that's good, I'm just saying that is how it was.
I do fine, I make good, I just have to concentrate on concentrating when necessary in work and study.
If the drugs do not heal it, I am against it. I think therapy, (which was not available for me)could be better

Do you mean ADHD? I think so. Anyways, I have ADHD and yes, it is given way too freely to people. I used to take medication for a couple of years but recently quit. And yes, I do believe we just have brains that are wired differently. We learn and think much differently than the average person. This is where the struggle comes in. We live in a world that is hardwired for a different brain structure. I stopped taking the medication because A.) After 2.5 years of adderall use, I realized that my life was no better than before it, in fact its worse. And B.) I stopped believing that I was damaged and needed to force myself to be like everyone else by taking these drugs. Edison is an ADHD poster boy. Imagine if he dropped all his crazy experiements and took a cocaine-like drug and took some office job. The whole world would have missed out.

I think its the way a culture raises their children that is responsible for most if not all differences in personality by gender. Boy babies are spoken too in a different tone of voice and even often held differently just by our knowledge that it is a boy , and this is from day one. They cannot escape the expectations and cultural norms attached to their behavior in society, no matter how well their parents try to be mindful of this.
I think we naturally learn the same when we are children, regardless of gender, yet considering how we raise girls they may be more adapted or comfortable in certain environments that reinforce their learned habits.
Also I agree, we should not use drugs on children for countless reasons from they are still developing to it is an unfair manipulation of their minds and bodies that they must live with as adults. It is an abuse of trust and a mixed message on the parents part no matter how well meaning.

many times i think that it is a failing of society.
children are not designed to sit in a classroom and listen to a teacher for 8 hours. they are designed to explore and experience new things.
most of these children are acting normaly. they have a lot of energy to burn, and when you confine them to a small desk in a small room that energy is going to come out in nervous ticks and foot tapping and such. and then as soon as it builds to a certain point it will come out all at once. this is why recess is so importent to elementry school education. but the 10 to 20 minutes that they get is simply not enough. two 20 minute breaks and a half hour in the middle of the day would create many more calm kids in the classroom.
as far as drugs go, i saw a news article yesterday that said that parents were requesting ADHD drugs for their kids, when they knew that their kids were not ADHD. they wanted it because thet thought that if it will help an ADHD kid focus, that it will turn their normal kid into a super stuident.
and how many people want ther kids on drugs just so that they do not have to spend time with them. (parents and schools)
many lack the basic understandint and patience to simply talk to a child and to find constructive ways to burn off the excess energy.
turn them into a zombie and put them in front of a tv.

ADHD is merely a term used when a parent, teacher or caregiver doesn't want to deal with an actual intellectual child. If the child is bored beyond belief in school they will seek to gaze out the window or even wander out of the classroom - "I'll be back when you are teaching something I don't already know". However that said it is also true that many children act out and misbehave in search of attention and because they aren't smart enough to grasp the common teachings. There are just some plain bad kids spawned out there and ADHD is the least of their problems. Even in the 60's they tried to medicate active minded children - at 3 years old the doctor insisted I needed to be on anti-psychotics and my parents complied under duress but quickly found that I didn't quite exist anymore so they put me in 4 year old kindergarden and took me off the crap and poof I excelled at everything including questioning what I was being taught. Teachers don't care for that too much and these days will say your kids is ADHD so they don't have to deal.

Some children truly need it, some do not. Those who need it should not be made to feel like it is a bad thing though. My godson had to have it between the ages of 8-12. But, he was only on it monday - friday, never the weekend, never a school vacation and never in the summer. He outgrew it as many young boys do. If he didn't have the help he would have slipped through the cracks in the school system. He's now a high school Junior and straight A student.

My younger brother has a mixture of ADHD, Autism, OCD, social disorders...there's a few.
He goes to regular school but has to have a little extra time to finish his work, usually brings it home. He takes so long because he likes every letter to look perfect...
He used to be on Rydilyn (sp?) but it made him stay up at night. He concentrated better but he hated taking it so my mom let him stop and he does about the same. He has his driver's license and seems to do better everyday.
It's very hard because he doesn't have very many friends, he is 17 but acts like a 5 year old in some ways.
But, I love him very much and really believe that the spirits that are most special to God have certain disabilities so Satan has less of a chance to tempt them. That's just my own belief.

There is such a thing as Montessori schools you know, but they just are too expensive and unheard of for most parents of ADHD children.
Boys will be boys, as they say.
I was unofficially ADHD as a boy, and caused a lot of trouble for my teachers because of it, but it wouldn't have been better if I just took ridelin every day and was a passive observer.
Personally, I think the best remedy for ADHD, especially in boys, is to give it a physical outlet as much as possible through exercise, sports, and with a more hands-on approach to learning in the classroom for boys.

I think its wrong also, especially when you take in consideration the uncertainties of medications/drugs over the long term and what type of an effect they will have on children as they get older and enter adulthood. for the most part, its uncharted territory. The bigger problem is that society wants to fix the symptoms and not the source of the problem, unfortunately for children, they become the Guinea pigs.
