There are dog toothbrushes and pastes available that will help. There are ways to train him to have his teeth brushed so he won't mind you doing it - I'm sure you can find information if you do a web search.

Also - you need to get him to a vet for a dental cleaning about every six months. That will make the biggest difference as the vet will take off all the tartar that is making the smell.

It could because of an infection in the gums and teeth. We took our dachshund to the vet and that was the diagnosis. She had her teeth cleaned and was given antibiotics. We give her doggie treats as well( raw hide sticks ) and they seem to help. If the breath is really bad take her/him to the vet. It might be an infection.

Did you check his teeth? They may need brushing with a soft toothbrush and dog toothpaste. If they're really bad, he should be checked by a vet to see if his teeth need cleaning. Poor dental care can lead to gingivitis and serious health problems for your dog.

Well, the most recomended thing would be to brush his teeth...however, there are a lot of owners who don't want to be puttig their fingers in some dogs mouth, so maybe you should take it to the vet. Also, give him lots of chew toys, as they tend to rub the plague off when they chew.

Never give them hand-outs...as certain foods tend to make it worse. (French fries, potatoe chips, dairy products. ect)
