HIV is different than most diseases because you do not realize that you are sick immediately. The average time it takes for HIV to turn into full blown AIDS untreated is about 10 years.
The first symptoms will appear when your T-cell count drops below 500/mL. The first symptoms of HIV infection often include moderate and unexplained weight loss, recurrent respiratory tract infections (such as sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis media, pharyngitis), herpes zoster and recurrent oral ulcerations. However, it usually takes about 3 years to reach this level.
If you are worried that you have contracted HIV, you should see a health care professional immediately. You need to know if you are infected so you do not accidentally infect other people. Also, current medication can slow the virus down, and people live longer if they catch the disease earlier.
