You should be able to go to the DMV and get another one. Just don't lose your title. If you lose the car title, it could be a bear to get another, though in these days with everything on computer, it's probably not as bad as it once was to replace. Probably costs a bit though.
Keep the car title in a safe place at home and not in the car itself.

Every state is different. Usually those caught without their proof of vehicle registration are subjected to a small non-moving violation fine. The best thing you can do is get it replaced, if you're willing to pay the fee associated with it.

Depending on your state laws, you just need to go to dmv and tell them you lost your card. They can replace it for you
