What kind of house can maintain 62 degrees? DAAAAM, that's some serious insulation.
There are many frozen places all over the world to have an inaugural winter plunge into a frozen lake. It is said to strengthen the immune system. While the kids are getting sick now, they willl probably be immune to everything as adults.

62 is a little on the cold side for any time of year. 68 is the best setting. The temp doesn't have a lot to do with them getting sick though. The problem is probably related more so to hygiene or diet. I grew up in a house with 8 kids and when someone got a cold it just kept bouncing back and forth continuously between everyone. It seemed like someone was always sick. Once the cold is airborne through sneezing and coughing it will stay in the house until things are sanitized and disinfected. Bacteria and germs thrive more in hotter temps than colder ones, thus the reason food needs to be kept at about 42 to prevent bacteria growth. The problem would actually be worse in warmer temps. Diet has a lot to do with kids getting a lot of colds too. They need a lot of fruits and veggies to keep them healthy. These are a great source of vitamins that are essential to young children. If they're not eating healthy foods, get them on a good multi vitamin supplement. Get these kids in the habit of washing their hands constantly and eating healthy, and have her wipe everything down with a good disinfectant at least once a week, and as long as there isn't some bigger problem like a weak immune system, there should be a big improvement. Good luck.

The only way one can get sick is from germs. Since keeping the temp at 62 degrees does not contain germs, I suspect they are picking them up at school, grocery store, etc. My kids' doctor has told me that your kids will adjust to what ever temp you keep your house. I would say 62 is okay as long as the kids are comfortable.

68 is about normal for the house. I think it is more harm in changing the temps. I used to work in food service and if I had to spend a lot of time in the walk-in fridge I would get stuffy because it was so hot in the kitchen. The kid's may be just getting exposed to germs elsewhere.

I would imagine that the opposite would hold true. The cooler the room, the less likely germs are to thrive. (Why do you think hospitals and operating rooms are kept so cold?) Cold air doesn't make people sick--germs do. 62 is a bit cold though--I was told 68-72 is optimal.

it depends on the children and how healthy they were to start with. i used to live in wisconsin and just recently moved to nm. my house was always at 65 for the winter and we had no air conditioning for summer. both my kids were fine and not even sick for the 4 years we owned that house before we moved. now in nm i am sicker more often than in wi. my kids are healthy and eat good foods to keep them that way. find out what foods they eat and if they are taking vitamins they may be weak children or the cold may be getting to them.

I dont think the temperature matters, cold does not kill bacteria it just slows the growth. Kids just get exposed to lots of different pathogens since they are always around other kids. I would watch them though cause it could be more. My daughter kept getting a sore throat and cold and it ended up being her tonsils she had to have them removed.

I don't think it's the colder temperature that causes them to get sick. I think the colder conditions in the house would lower their resistance making them more susceptible to getting sick.

Illnesses are not caused by the weather or temprature of the home, they are caused by airborne viruses and germs that are passed from one person to another.
