She should seek her doctors advice because each person is different and has different reactions to certain medications. There are many medications to help her with her pain and to help rebuild cartilage etc, but some medications can interact with others she might be on and cause a bad reaction.

Rheumatiod arthritis (RA) and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are types of inflammatory arthritis. RA is an autoimmune disorder-a "self attacking-self disease-in which the body's immune system improperly identifies the synovial membranes that secrete the lubricating fluid in the joints as foreign. Inflammatioin results, and the cartilage and tissues in and around the joints are damaged or destroyed. Often the bone surfaces are desroyed as well. The body replaces this damaged tissue with scar tissue, causing the normal spaces within the joints to become narrow and the bones to fuse together.
Eat more sulfer-containing foods, such as asparagus, eggs, garlic, and onions. Sulfer is needed for the repair and rebuilding of bone, cartilage, and connective tissue, and aids in the absorption of calcium. Other good foods include green leafy vegetables, which supply vitamin K; fresh vegetables; non acidic fresh fruits; whole grains; oatmeal; brown rice; and fish.
Eat some form of fiber, such as ground flaxseeds, oat bran, or rice bran daily.
Reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Do not consume milk, dairy products, or red meat. Also avoid caffeine, citrus fruits, papricka, salt, tobacco, and everything that contains sugar.
