Wow! I am a new cat-lover, got my first kitty a year ago and just recently got a new baby to keep the first one company. I knew they lived a long time but had no idea it would be two decades! I'm excited now that I know I will have my kitty companions for so long. Kudos to your aunt for taking great care of her!

The lifespan of a cat is variable depending on many factors. The main contributing factor is whether or not the cat lives indoors or out. Obviously there will be some exceptions to the rule, but the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about 3 to 5 years, while the average lifespan of an indoor cat is about 16 years. I've seen very old cats. I believe the oldest cat I have seen is 22 years, but I believe they can sometimes live longer.

I believe 18-20 is the average. I have a cat who is 19 and one that is 10. Both are outdoor cats too. Is 21 normal? I would say yes!

When I was a kid everyone told me 12 years was the life time of a cat. Now my cat is nearly 17! I read somewhere that the average if well treated is 21 years. But if yours is over 21 well then happy years! Lucky you! ;) I hope mine lives that long!!!

Depends if the cat is an indoor cat or in/out cat. I have an in/out cat and he is 20 and that is long for one allowed outside. Around the middle teen years is average I think for a cat.

That's way above average. Probably 15 years is the average. Both my cats lived to be 20. But they were indoor cats and never really sickly.

That is very unusual and more power to your aunt that she has taken such good care of her cat.

I have a 22 yr old cat that I rescued when she was fifteen. I know I will not have her much longer and I am so grateful that she came into my life when she did.

Actually, it is. My oldest cat is 18 and is very spry for his age. I know some cats who are 25 years old. They are frail and have health problems though. If your aunty's cat is in good health and can still enjoy life, it's doing just fine. Blessings.
