I too like Laphroaig, If you like it you may also like Highland Park.
The funny thing is Ardbeg and Lagavulin all lie within a few miles of each other but taste totally different.
Islay produces many fine malts I also like Bruichladdich a bit lighter to drink.

I find the Speyside malts (eg Glenlivet & Glenfiddich) taste a little salty. Glenmorangie is a pleasant Highland Malt that is to be found in most supermarkets. The lowland malts can be a bit subtle so these are best to start the evening. I do agree that Laphroaig is oozing with flavour but it is definitely not a whisky to drink a lot of. Try the other Islay and Jura Malts, see if your can tell one peat bog from another!

I like all the single malts. I usually buy the least expensive brand, and only splurge when I can afford one of the high end varieties. They're all good in their own right. If you like single malts, you might also like the American equivalent; sour mash whiskey. My favorite of these is George Dickle's Old # 12. It's about as smooth as a whiskey gets.

Talisker 18yr special distillers edition - aged in sherry casks rather than traditional American Oak barrels gives it smooth taste, yet still has strong peaty flavour. Unfortunately it is in the Diageo chain, as are most the scotch whiskeys now, shame.

Aberlour, i think the hubby is collecting single malts (that's not quite right becasue they do get drunk when the boys come round) i can't stomach whisky but they have a special one out that is very smooth.

Holidaying in Stornoway I asked in a bar hoping to get some good information,"What is the best whisky?" a short mumbled conference and the answer was... "The one on offer at the local Co-oP"

Agree with you,
Have a bottle that is being jealously hoarded.
The Bowmore distillery (also on Islay) does some good ones too - particularly their Legend, which can sometimes be obtained "on offer" at a reasonable price.
