When you walk in the front door, you'll see at least 3 and sometimes 4 levels. For instance, the bedrooms and a master bathroom will be 6 stairs up and then under the upstairs, you go down 6 stairs to a family room. There may also be a basement under the living room and kitchen. When there are 4 levels, they call it a quad though.

A split-level house is exactly what it says: split level. When you walk in the front door of a split level, you are at the top and the bottom of a staircase at the same time. You must chose to either walk up to one level of the house, or down to the other.

A split level house has more than one floor, mostly three, where the second floor is to one side and not as low as the first, but not as high as the third either. So the floor plan is split, not solid. Make sense? (From the exterior, most look like they have two floors).
