There's a new practice with spaying and neutering dogs and cats. Vets are spaying/neutering much, much earlier than before --- 3 months age, or so.
This new practice is endorsed by many Humane Societies and professionals as equally as safe as waiting til the pet is 6 mo.
My family's NO KILL dog/cat shelter has researched the safety issue. There does not seem to be any added danger to the pet's health or emotional development.
The benefit -- reduction by the thousands of unplanned, unwanted pups/kittens.
By the time a dog/cat is 6 months old, both can easily come into heat and get pregnant. Since we are up to our ears in strays, the practice of early spaying/neutering is catching on.
Most vets tell me that letting a female go through a heat makes no difference in her emotional health. And, letting a male mature to 6 months can allow male traits to develop into the fighting stage. And, there's a chance once the male gets "macho" he might keep the "habit" even after neutering!
So, consider spaying her earlier, rather than later.

Most vets like to wait until at least 6 months. Some will do it sooner. There are some vets who can spay at 8 wks, but I would wait. Hormones play a part in the long term growth and developement. When you spay, the hormones are gone.
Price depends on where you live and the weight of the dog. If you know what your dog weighs, you can call around and get quotes from different vets in your area.

Most vet's like to do it before they are a year old but after 6 months so they say the best time is between then.
It costs anywhere's from 80-200 depending on the vet and cost. If you have a Banfield pet hospital near you I would recommend going there and going on the wellness plan. It will then includ the spaying..

I had mine done last month, and it was $90 here...
that was normal price for a 20 pound dog in my area.
It can be done at any time, but vets like to do it at 6 months...my dog was 7 years.
Most areas have a low cost program, so it might pay to call your local SPCA..

Some Docs will do it when the dog is two pounds, others have an age bracket they like, you will have to ask your vet their policy. In my area, sterilization ranges from $90-$175.
