Their are several types of tile for residential. Most common and least expensive is ceramic. You can order tile in any stone or marble as well. As far as hardwood goes, and I can't pretend to know you, but if you have kids, pets or just a lot of traffic or pine needles, gravel etc. Hardwood should be the least attractive of your options. Laminate floors, that look like real wood hold up way better and aren't as susceptable to water damage. Laminates have come a long way since the horrors of Pergo! The only thing you need to keep in mind is that those types of floors are cold on the feet, depending on where you live I suppose, and laying on the floor watching tv is just about out of the question, one other thing you can consider is a carpet insert in the middle of your flooring gives you the cushion and is less apt to get dirty or soiled since you or your furniture will cover most of it. As far as tile goes, make sure you seal it so your grout lines don't stain AND lastly don't ever spill a large amount of sugar, flour or any of those sorts of things, you'll be cleaning it forever! Hope this helps!

There are solid vinyl tile squares. Expensive but elegant. Usually 12" X 12".
Used to also be 9" X 9". Not sure those are still available.

There are Vinyl composition tile squares. These are usually used in commercial installations. 9" X 9", and 12" X 12".
Some are designed for home decorating.
There are Laminates made in random lengths to resemble strip wood flooring which have a wood like grain appearance.

Not sure about these today.
There were some in Laminates squares
18" X 18".
There poured floors in various tones.
Nor sure these are still used.

Many woods available.
Strip wood, random lengths.
Parquet.

Custom wood floors, cut in geometric shapes and installed with other materials to form exotic designs. Extremely expensive.
I've seen these inlaid with Mother of Pearl, Metals, including Gold.

Any floor covering store can show you everything available.

You can search on the Internet for "Flooring", and I'm sure you will find all the manufacturers. Many or most will have photographs and info, as well as dealers in your area.
I retired from the business several years ago.

Natural stone: marble, slate, limestone
Travertine
Ceramic tiles: colored or those that have a stone appearance.
Hardwood
If you use any tiles that require grout make sure you seal it very well.
If you have concrete under your carpet, it can be painted with concrete paint which comes in various colors. Or you can use a concrete stain. There are some good books out there about painting concrete floors. You can even make it look like your floor is tiled when it isn't.

because of the adaptation in pore sizes interior various organic stones, there are fairly good products for laying marble, limestone, slate..and so on. so some distance as ceramic tiles bypass...there is in basic terms one distinction....surely... both latex-changed or non changed. changed is mostly the whole as a results of further plasticity and regularity of curing. it isn't in spite of the undeniable fact that, usable lower than any water resistant or hermetic membrane like Ditra, because it has an prolonged drying time and lower than such situations might want to under no circumstances dry. In precis, customary non changed skinny-set is an unbelievably adaptable and vesatile bonding cement which will artwork nicely for all the above. changed will be slightly better for all or maximum. and fairly good products exist for marble and such that could want to also be slightly better. and theres mastic...yet under no circumstances on bathe flooring and under no circumstances in any respect if achieveable.
