As you may be aware the police officer in charge of the operation in which John Charles de Menezes was killed has been promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard. What do you think of this development? Was the promotion right or just a display of arrogance by the police?

Interesting how everyone here presumes the officer in question is a man...... Hmmmm...
To have an opinion, we must have all the facts!

Its a complex case, and i dont believe there was any blame. If anyone should get stick, it was the ARMY surveillence man who was convenienlty having a wee with his cameras turned off when Menedez first left his block of flats. I believe that is where the mistake happened.
Everyone else was just doing a job and acting in good faith.

If you look at this officers career, maybe she deserves a promotion. The media only report on the bad and never the good.

Ok so he was in charge of the case.....did he pull the trigger ?? and why should one incident (I think the police acted 100% with the situation they were faced with) jepordize his career ??? Had the Fella been a suicide bomber, got on the train and blown it up... everyone would be shouting were were the police and why did they let it happen....... The police are here to police the streets and we should let them do it..... and no I am not a copper just think that they need more recognition for what they are up against.

I think that this is disgusting. Yes everyone makes mistakes, and this incident happened after the london bombings, but come on. As an experienced police officer with so much good technology and resources, you order the killing of an innocent person. Its not just the person that pulls the trigger that is responsible, but mainly the person who ordered the killing. He was on the floor, yet they still shoot him, not once but seven times. If someone has a bomb on them, the last thing you do is shoot that person in case you manually detonate that bomb. This was an indiscriminate attack on a innocent individual, but again, the police's incompetance and arrogance comes again.

i wasn't there so i cant say what happened, but i do know that if he had of had a bomb and got onto a train and blown it up the police would of been blamed just the same for not stopping him. our police have never been able to do right according to the public.but the public will still yell for them when THEY want them

The Met seem to make a habit of PR disasters. All promotions above the rank of D.I. are probably political anyway

I suppose he must regret the incident because had they killed a few more innocent people he might have made Chief Constable

I still think he should have done a stretch for manslaughter
