yes we do depend too much on technology. as civilization advances we depend more and more upon out inventions and creations. we could live without them but not all of us. without the advances that we have made in medicine, for example, many people would be dead and many others would have much shorter lifespans. so, we have the ability to destroy the earth with nuclear capabilities but we also have the ability to keep children alive who would otherwise have died without the technology that we have learned to take for granted.

Of course we do. Technology, i.e. tools, are what defines human beings. As soon as we took our hammer-rocks and attached handles, we were stuck.
Would life be better? How far down do you want to peel the onion? What level of technology would make you feel all right? Everyone uses technology differently and adopts and rejects parts as needed or desired. I am comfortable around computers and information gadgets, but when I cook I don't like to use cooking gadgets (too much stuff to clean). That's what's nice about technology - use only what you need.

We do depend to much on technology but some of the technology we need for health reasons. for ex: we couldnt do a heart transplant without technology. The succes rate for surgery would be much lower when going into surgery for a simple opteration. Without tech we couldnt seperate conjoined twins that easily they both would die more times then they do now and most of the time now they both or at least one of them has a chance. The success rate is much better with techonolgy then it was without it.
we may depend on some technology that is not that important to have like cell phone just to call people everyday and tvs they are not that important either so yeah we do depend on non important technology way too much.

I think we depend WAY too much on technology. We enjoy the luxury of technology, but our reliance on it is getting out of hand. If people functioned just fine in the past without it,then to an extent we should learn the ways of the past. From Ipods, mp3, DVD this, digital that. It is very convenient to get the job done by just a press of a button when in the past getting the same job done would require blood, sweat and tears sometimes. America is number one in obesity and one of the reasons behind this health issue goes beyond the consumption of junk food. It has to do with the lack of being active. Americans have to have it NOW. We are not willing to wait or work for it harder. If it is easier to press a button, or fax someone your meal order request, than we will do so. Forget preparation and do it yourself. I know I have drifted a wee bit from the question, but the whole technology thing goes hand in hand with my response.

wow, awesome question. I'm reading this book titled, "As in the Heart, So in the Earth: Reversing the Desertification of the Soul and the Soil." It's an amazing book about a tribe whose land was literally ripped apart over many years and now they are trying to nurse it back to health. This book and also a friend made a very valid point; our "advancement" in technology has caused OUR earth to go through some terrible changes and we're hurting her. Without this earth... everything dies. What's the whole point of having a $300 cell phone then?
To answer your question: Yes, I do believe that we depend way too much on technology.

Most progreesive countries, yes. In some part of the world, people are doing things the old fashioned ways. Life would be worst without today's technology and the modern gadget.

The technology will march on, even when we're all dead. The machines will all be so advanced in the future, they will have minds of their own and will be conquering space long after humans go extinct.
It's like the next logical step in the evolution of intelligent life. Just think about all the life that has occurred up until now, and where it is headed. Look at how prolific the computers and automobiles are. Imagined if they moved under their own power. It's going to happen! I won't be around to see it but it's going to be like the birth of a new type of organism.

Yes, but why shouldn't we?
If you mean, gadgets and computers, then these are just the upgraded version of technology in history. If you look back a few thousand years, technology was "the Wheel" "Writng" "irrigation" these basic elements are actually "technology" so, NO we can't and shouldn't live without them. The progress and simple function of society depends on it!

The purpose of Technology is a valid benefit to all of our lives, unfortunately, we tend to squander those benefits. The main benefits of technological advances are: Time, Safety, Health and Communication. Many people fail to turn that to a positive and constructive gain to improve there own ability to affect the best uses of those gains. It is not always a conscious choice to do this, that is the danger of heavy reliance on technological assistance. It tends to make the user more dependent on the benefit gained and they strive to squeeze in more productivity from the task that the technology aided them with in the 1st place. It is just as addictive as an organic drug or craving for many.

Roundup a couple of like minded friends, go into interior Africa or the amazon jungles and try living by your wits alone, you will surely be able to form an informed opinion. What environmentalists want us to beleive is not the truth, technology leads to more efficient use of anything, but it is our tendency to consume more and more and the tendency to produce more an more off-springs that is negating the advantages that technology brings us what we need to do and fast is to
1. control the uncontrolled growth in the world population
2.control the unchecked overuse of facilities just because it is there
3.stop or control the advertisement mania which is fuel-ling in a very large way the rampant consumerism which is not the product of technology
4.follow the teachings of Buddha who said follow a middle path
